A healthy body and a healthy mind

Food, herbs, movement and meditation: caring for yourself with attention.

Taking care of yourself need not become a huge project. An unhurried meal, some movement, a quiet moment and contact with someone you care about can become part of a gentle daily rhythm. Health is not an achievement and illness is not a personal failure.

Body and mind deserve attention together

Body and mind belong to the same life. Tiredness can make patience harder; worries can fill the day. Attending to both allows us to ask: what do I need today? You do not have to think positively all the time to care for yourself.

My experiences with this theme

Passages from my book, in my own words. Each excerpt is followed by a comparison with the theme of this page.

What moves me within

From the chapter · Renato Rossi

I carry the absence of Marco with me. Our bond lives on in memories, in the ideas we shared and in my love for him. When I look for meaning in what I experience, that love is also part of my search.

For me, this inner search also takes shape in everyday gestures: listening to someone, taking responsibility for my actions, trying to forgive. My questions about the invisible bring me back to the people around me and the attention I can give them.

Connection and comparison

Memories of Marco and the wish to listen lead back to caring for the people nearby. Love and attention to body and mind connect with that movement.

Intuition, the Silent Voice

From the chapter · Renato Rossi

Not every important decision in my life began with a calculation. Sometimes there was first a feeling. An almost inaudible warning. Or, on the contrary, a peaceful confidence telling me I should explore a certain path. That is what I call intuition. To me, intuition is not a magical voice that is always right. Nor is it an excuse to ignore facts. I see it as a silent voice born from experience, love, and attentiveness.

Everything we have lived through leaves something within us. Conversations. Looks. Mistakes. Disappointments. Moments when we were right to trust someone. And moments when, looking back, we understood we should have been more careful. Our reason cannot constantly name every one of those impressions individually. Yet they are preserved somewhere within us. Sometimes they come together in a single feeling, faster than a complete line of reasoning. During my career, I experienced that often.

Connection and comparison

The quiet voice invites another look, rather than ignoring facts. The intuition page develops that distinction; body and mind offers a quiet moment of attention.

Simple, varied nourishment

Regularly choose vegetables, fruit, pulses and whole grains. Vary your protein sources and more often choose unsaturated fats, such as olive oil and unsalted nuts. Limit salt and sugary drinks. Follow individual dietary advice when your health requires it.

One meal idea: vegetables with beans or lentils, a whole grain and a little olive oil. Adapt it to your taste, budget, appetite and abilities. Cooking together or sitting down without rushing can also be part of the meal.

Herbs: flavour, fragrance and thoughtful use

Basil with tomatoes, parsley with vegetables, thyme or rosemary in an oven dish: culinary herbs can add flavour when using less salt. These are cooking suggestions rather than treatments for disease.

Extracts, capsules and concentrated preparations differ from a small amount in a dish. “Natural” does not automatically mean safe: supplements can interact with medicines. Ask a pharmacist, particularly with blood thinners or heart medication. Do not replace prescribed treatment with herbs.

Meditation and attention

Meditation involves gently returning your attention. You do not need to switch off your thoughts. Research suggests possible benefits for stress and some symptoms, but results vary. Meditation can complement care and does not replace treatment.

A quiet two-minute practice

  1. Sit comfortably with your body supported; keep your eyes open if you prefer.
  2. Notice your feet on the floor and listen briefly to the sounds around you.
  3. Let your breath come and go naturally, without forcing or holding it.
  4. Mind wandering? Gently return your attention. Finish by looking around you.

If inward attention feels unpleasant or increases anxiety, stop and focus on your surroundings. A gentle walk or listening to music may suit you better.

Movement, sleep and connection

Move within your abilities and break up long periods of sitting. A short walk or gentle chair movements can be a beginning. Build up gradually; seek guidance if medical conditions limit activity.

Regular sleep times and a quiet evening routine can help. Make room for connection too: a call, a shared meal or attentive listening. We do not have to carry everything alone.

One small step for today

  1. Choose one meal to which you could add something nourishing.
  2. Flavour a dish with a culinary herb you enjoy.
  3. Make room for an achievable movement break and a quiet moment.
  4. Tonight, look back kindly: what felt helpful today?
